This is my bedroom's desk space before last night's impromptu (and for my creative soul, necessary) make over. It was begging for help, it's certainly not a space that inspires or draws me in for writing and designing.
I hung a few of my favorite frugal thrift store finds and art pieces. The two large maps read "The Florida Times Union Jacksonville Journal". They were mysterious Goodwill finds, $2 each. I wrote about the Secretary cross stitch art on Monday. The moon map came with my first telescope, I framed it in a thrifted frame a few years back.
The black framed painting print (of Venice, with a full moon) was purchased from a local artist at the Riverside Arts Market. I searched for the perfect frame for months and finally found it this weekend, it has just the right amount of distress.
The Japanese paper doll "shadow box" style art pieces are from Fans and Stoves antique store. I carefully painted the frames to match the Japanese patterns the girls wear.
I was hesitant to purchase this lamp but I'm glad I ran back for it. It's featured in this Monday's thrift haul post. The gold owl was a .50 rummage sale find. The owl folk art mixed media painting was another purchase from the Riverside Arts Market, it looks perfect next to the lamp.
This bedroom desk make over is just a quick fix until I paint the walls and frame some of my other favorite art pieces, but I'm happy with the changes. My neglected bedroom needed this.

ReplyDeleteI have a think for lamps, too. I've got three in my bedroom alone. Soft lighting is so relaxing...
ReplyDeleteIt is SO nice to meet YOU!
ReplyDeleteAwesome nook - evokes just the right mood and beautifully created. Bravo!!!
xo,
Kim
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. Your office looks amazing. It really doesn't look like the same room. Great job!
ReplyDeleteIt's just amazing what a little art on the walls will do for a space. I used to work in an art gallery and it was an absolute joy to go to work each day! And local art markets are a great way to subsidize local artists and (often cheaply) get some unique stuff. I'm fortunate to live close to New Orleans where not even Hurricane Katrina could keep down the arts community there--alive and well, just like the city itself.
ReplyDeleteA space doesn't feel like a home without art of some kind. You certainly had my dream job working in an art gallery. Last year while selling art I always broke even because I collected art from other vendors as soon as mine sold! I can't wait to experience New Orlean's art scene: eclectic, bawdy, and classy all at once. My kind of art.
ReplyDeleteThis is SO cute and so YOU! I love it. I love the way you museum hung your art, where it's stacked and balanced by room on the wall not in a pattern or by size!
ReplyDeleteIt is fabulous Van. I would love an office corner like that. I can't wait to hang something on the walls. We are choosing not to because we want to think of this as temporary. But I miss art on walls. I love that lamp and the owl!!!
ReplyDeleteYour office now looks really warm and conducive to production. I like the way you saved the old moon print and now have it framed and on display. Homes should be created from bits of us and that's exactly what you've done. Bravo! Pam @ Sallygoodin
ReplyDeleteSelena- I kind of see my space as temporary but since I won't be a home owner for a long time, I shall decorate each space I come to occupy anyway.
ReplyDeletePam- I agree, each room in our home should have personal pieces and bits of ourselves. Each piece on that wall is pretty personal for me. Especially the telescope map and the painting on Venice (which I have fond childhood memories of).
Oh, much better, quite an improvement.
