2011 is officially the year of thrifter-friendly television! The newest edition is Cash and Cari, which follows Cari Cucksey as she thrifts and hunts for hidden treasures to sell for profit. It premiers on HGTV tonight (January 3) at 10 P.M (ET/PT).
Show Description: Cari and her team search estate sales, flea markets, dusty attics and cluttered garages to find hidden or overlooked antique furniture, decorative accessories, collectibles and memorabilia. Whether it’s a vintage Chanel gown left behind at the dry cleaners, a limited-edition pink vinyl copy of Michael Jackson’s Thriller* or a Capodimonte porcelain statuette, Cari’s expert eye will spot the undiscovered gems that could lead to big bucks.
*Give me this! Give it to me now, Cari! I love me some MJ.
HGTV is harnessing social media to make the show interactive. They're allowing viewers to upload photos of their treasures to HGTV.com, each week Cari will pick one item and appraise its value. Consider this a venue for enthusiastic antique hunters to network.
“Cari’s extensive knowledge of antiques and valuables is remarkable,” said Kathleen Finch, general manager, HGTV. “Her adventures will inspire HGTV viewers to search for the treasures in their own attics and garages, not only for fun, but also for profit.”

What do you think of Thrift TV?
Do you like this new surge in thrifter-friendly TV? What would you like to see more of?
The show sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting. This show looks great. I'm always pleasantly surprised to find thrift-friendly entertainment these days. I know the downward spiraling ecnonomy must have a thing or two to do with that. But it would also be nice to see some thrifty programming that highlights some pros of donating/upcycling/collecting from a a green-positive POV, and not just from a financial standpoint. Still...it's entertainment nonetheless!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting, I like parts of the website. Although the website isn't too creative!! Thanks for the tip, I'm off to get reading!
ReplyDeleteHi Van. I really enjoyed this show and think it be would be a hoot to work for her. Thank you for your kind comment on my blog. I will look to your blog for inspiration too as I am an aspiring writer.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see the show in person. It's about time HGTV put on some new shows. I'd stopped watching it, 'cause all they seem to have on is House Hunters.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh sadly, I don't get cable TV here in my house! Maybe it will be available online or netflix someday? Darn-it!
ReplyDeleteBUT ... I would love to enter the giveaway!
Had not heard of the show, but looking forward to checking it out - hmm... going up against Pawn Stars? I have mixed feelings about the whole Pawn Shop / Pickers / Storage Auction / Thrifter phenomenon for cable TV shows. I guess it's nice to watch cause it's much more interesting than the usual fare, but man, like I NEED more competition from everyone and their mom becoming a Picker LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited for this show. It looks like it would teach more than the American Pickers and seems more relateable to me because she does what I do in the estate sale, flea market sense. But, yes, I do agree with A La Modern. Hope this doesn't bring too many wanna be resellers to my local estate sales! It's a tough fight out there as it is!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if I have that channel here, im gonna try and check it out sounds interesting
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to watch! I LOVE the thrifting 'trend'? and think tv is a great expansion to it. However, it may shrink the items I find!
ReplyDeleteI love the shows as long as they are real and not 'set up'. I saw the sneak peek of this show on New Year's Day and I have to say it looks really good. I will wait and see. At least she isn't just looking at guy junk.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing the show for the first time tonight...good luck to everyone involved in the show!
ReplyDeleteCompetition should be the least of anyone's concerns
We are a nation of up-graders,re-placers and down-sizers, there will always be plenty of goods for everyone. Besides, not everyone has the same interest, cash flow or intentions for the purchases they make.
I'm with A La Modern. It will be interesting to see what she scores, but I really am not looking forward to the wave of new competition. Many of these shows are indeed set up. Who would want to see a few episodes of people finding "crap" as we often do.
ReplyDeleteWow, I hadn't heard of this new show! It's all me, that's for sure! I'd love to win your giveaway! thanks, Heidi
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year! I missed this show..we only have that channel for another week:( I upgrade our satelite over the holidays as a gift to the kids...and me! (I think I'm addicted to Dog the bounty hunter!! HELP ME!!!)
ReplyDeleteOoops! I meant to say thanks for the chance to win!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for featuring this new show; I'll definitely be tuning in!
ReplyDeleteDVR here I come. I can't wait to check out this show. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteI look forward to watching this show! I am hoping she will educate us all.
ReplyDeleteI'm cautiously optimistic about this show. I hope it isn't focused only on the financial aspect of "picking", I hope that it can show that one man's trash is another (wo)man's treasure. The one short spot I saw on the show about revamping a bench was entirely too short!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what a Red Can Koozie is, but methinks I want one! Sign me up!
ReplyDeleteSaw the preview, can't wait to see the show--I love & watch HGTV so much, my hubby affectionally refers to it as Home Girl TV!
ReplyDeleteThis looks perfect! I just added it to my record guide so I don't have to worry about missing it. Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI love thrifty shows because they reflect my life!
