Thrift Haul: Delicious Retro Scores

'Twas a chaotic weekend for me! This thrift haul is actually from last weekend, I decided to split it in half because of the sheer amount of finds. See that cute little brown lamp pictured? It fell and broke before I could even use it! Like I said- too much chaos at the house the past couple of days!

I was running errands and decided to make a quick stop into a Goodwill that's typically a hit or miss. My former roommate protested entering this particular Goodwill because it doesn't always deliver the goods, but I told him, "You never know, maybe I'll find another Horizon Otagiri set!" (Our favorite Thrift Score).

And lo and behold, we walk in and find just that, another set of Japanese international stoneware that's very simular to what I craved.

My favorite part of the set are these cups; perfect for a cappuccino, or a little serving of coffee ice cream in the summer. I intend to keep the bowls and cups but sell the plates, since I have enough of those. Anyone interested?

Another find from the same Goodwill was this craft art. I love the colors and the rural look of it. I've seen scenes like this, living in the south for so long. I love photographing abandoned and overgrown vignettes like this one. I don't like displaying scenes like this in the house, though, so this one is for sale at Southern Crossing Antique Mall.

And yet another from the same Goodwill (evidence sometimes you just have to stop in, even if you don't expect any good finds- you never know what you'll get).

I've never seen blue retro toadstools like this. This will look perfect in my kitchen filled with a tiny fern plant. I'm starting a toadstool collection since I really love them and they don't sell for the price I want them to at the antique store.

I found one of these at Goodwill, the other at The Thrift Center on Blanding Blvd. I'd found the exact same one in January, and it became my favorite soup thermos. I left it at my ex-friend's house when I delivered her some soup when she was sick, and couldn't retrieve it.

I was bummed, thinking I'd never find one again- then the Thrift Gods delivered me two! You were kind to me last weekend, Thrift Fates!

I found this Jim Morrison bar mirror art and vintage hippo planter at The Thrift Center. The hippo is already for sale at the Southern Crossing Antique Mall, and the Jim Morrison will soon follow. I love the bright colors and how they added flecks of gold from the flames to his eyes.

The cool novelty wine container gun is from a yard sale I went to last week.

What did you find this weekend?

  1. I scored some great teacups and saucers a couple of weeks ago. I plan to pull out my calligraphy pen and get to writing on them!

  2. the hippo planter cracks me up for some reason. and such a shame about that lamp! and it's sometimes funny how things go 'round in the world of thrift, with fate or whatever bringing things our way.

always fun to look through your finds. have a great week van!

  5. Mongs: Nope, they never deliver, even though they WILL sometimes come and pick up old stuff you don't need. "The Thrift Gods" are something I made up, an imaginary force that helps us thrifters find the exact right item at the right time :)

  6. Shanika: Good idea! I've been meaning to paint on some thrifted cups and plates.

Ana: The hippo cracked me up, I just couldn't leave him behind with his missing tooth and fun expression. I'd love to keep him, but I know he'll warm someone's heart and add some kitschy fun to their home.

  15. the hippo is my fave, too bad i live in a totally different country. don't you love it when the thrift fates smile on you? i had the same experience with a card game called Quiddler. played it one afternoon at a staff retreat, loved it and thought to myself i'm gonna have to look out for this at the thrift shop, found it the next day for 80 cents.
this weekend i found a great summer skirt and top and a couple of other clothing items that i'll need for summer. i also found a great consignment shop and think i'm going to try consigning some clothes to see if i can earn some money this way. do you ever use consignment shops?

  21. Great scores you made sad about the lamp is why I am not a huge fan on collection glassware and pottery items.

  22. Nelly: I typically treat my stuff better, it's just been a chaotic month! (Although I did break two of my favorite Horizon Otagiri bowls -sniff- I'm clumsy.)

  23. The art craft picture is typical of what I take and make into pillows. I find that they are out of style hung on the wall, but if you re-purpose it, you can give it a new life. Selecting a great fabric and trim to cooridinate with the picture transforms an unloved picture into a great new accessory!
