Thrift stores frequently sell questionable donations. Half-used toiletries. Toxic chemicals. Used undies. A favorite local thrift not only stocks bizarre items, but keeps them in a locked Wunderkammer-like Cabinet 'O Curiosities up front. This week I peered inside to witness stomach churning horror. You've been warned!
Behold the Nightmare Cabinet and prepare yourself for the nightmare fuel precariously stocked within...
ANUSOL? Horror of horrors! And if you read carefully you'll see these are suppositories? Go ahead, let it sink in that this thrift store is selling Hemmorrhoidal suppositories called Anusol. Do they even make this stuff anymore? Is it legal to sell it outside a pharmacy!?
After seeing the horror that is Anusol on thrift store shelves, doesn't Bearded Dragon Food (possibly expired) seem normal by comparison?!
What's the Weirdest Thing You've Seen at the Thrift Store?
Yah, I've always wondered about the 1/2 used bottles of lotions and potions. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteThe lizard food doesn't bother me too much.
Those folks at the charity thrift shops have some horror stories of things donated that they DIDN'T put out for sale. (the designer handbag with an 'odor' inside that turned out to be a baggie of doggie dooo, for instance.)
I've always wondered why anyone would donate those rubber backed mats for around the commode - ewwww - and they get offered for sale!
I guess people actually buy the 1/2 used lotions, so thrift stores stock 'em despite that fact that this one has a dollar store next to it with brand new, name brand toiletries for less money...
DeleteI always wonder who is buying those used undies...gross! How much does a brand new value pack of undies cost at WalMart anyways? I bet they even sell new undies at the dollar store...
ReplyDeleteOf course, I have seen people selling and buying nasty used house slippers on ebay...I guess there is a buyer out there for just about everything!
-pamela ;)
That's the thing. I can't understand it when you can get it new for cheap myself, but I -almost- can't fault people for selling. Less stuff in the landfills, I suppose.
Deletei feel bad for the person that might actually NEED the Anusol and has to ask to get it out of the cabinet!!
ReplyDeleteYes indeed! Man, that's an unfortunately named product. No ambiguity to hide behind.
DeleteGuess you could say it's for your friend...
What the what?
ReplyDeleteIndeeed...
Deleteyikes! I have never seen anything like it at my thrift stores! Although I did hit a garage sale last summer that had boxes of OTC medicines that had been expired for 10 years.
ReplyDeleteA lot of thrift stores here have a "junk store" vibe where they put out EVERYTHING...so many questionable items lurk.
DeleteI've always thought that they should trash that stuff - because who's to say that the person who donated it didn't put something mean in the bottles that could hurt someone? I mean, people DO do crazy things. I'm going to have to think about the weirdest thing that I've seen in a thrift. I know there has to be something.
ReplyDeleteOne time I bought a Sigmund Freud action figure from the Salvation Army. It was still in the box!
ReplyDeleteFirst off: view discretion is advised.
ReplyDeleteOK, so I was walking around the thrift store, and I came across a device that is designed to help women to expand...down there. Seeing as how I'm not a woman, I've heard that some need to be, I guess, "re-shaped" for lack of a better term. The odd thing was that I was on the phone with my friend, who happened to be dating a woman suffering from that very same issue (we're very close). Of course, he wasn't interested in a USED one, plus he didn't really know how to slip that into conversation with his lady friend.
Oh, and my thrift store also carries personal massagers behind the counter. Yeah, the dirty kind. Who buys those USED?!!
BURN IT! BURN IT ALL...that is illegal. Has to be!
Deletehahaha, Anusol (sold here in the UK) is pretty grim. I thought the half used body scrub (with finger marks) I found was bad.
ReplyDeleteThe local charity shops have just been dull recently, but I have found some AMAZING valentines gifts on eBay!
Good for you, supporting eBay sellers :)
DeleteThe Anusol is TERRIFYING. I've never seen anything with quite that level of ick, but just today I did see something strange.
ReplyDeleteIt was one of those vintage perfume containers, shaped like a traincar. But, it had no cap and was just slowly leaking perfume all over the shelf (and my hands... I stupidly picked it up). The whole area smelled like a very manly perfume store. I just can't understand why they put it out... to stink up their store and ruin stuff next to it? Bizarre.
Ooh...the stories I will spare you ;) Sometimes I want to thrift in gloves. Hazmat?
DeleteI hate getting perfume and lotion residue ick on my hands.
Grossest thing I ever found in a thrift store: a speculum. A stainless steel speculum. It was with a bunch of kitchen utensils. I always wonder if someone bought it not knowing what it was.
ReplyDeleteRecently I saw used little girls (I'd say 3-5) underwear, my friend pointed it out while we were walking down the aisle. Little girls underwear is cheap, only a sicko would be buying used little girls underwear for $1.49.
Vagisil was another good one.
So was the sharps box. I've seen two of them now.
NIGHTMARES, AAAH! If I worked as one of the people sorting thrift store stuff I'd be tempted to wear gloves.
DeleteI do believe I've seen off-brand vagisil on the shelves somewhere...
I was just thinking the same thing at the nice church basement I go to - they had all these hotel sample type lotions and shampoos, nicely packed into ziploc bags in "sets" and I'm thinking... Some of these aren't full...and why?? Why would anyone??
ReplyDeleteI deleted a whole rant about the same thing when I edited this post ;) You can buy toiletries new for cheap, I tell you! This particular thrift store is right next to a dollar store that sells plenty of name brand toiletries for less!
DeleteUr, to each their own?
Anusol...Lol. That's just wrong. Funny... But wrong. :D
ReplyDeleteIt's the best title ever. They need more commercials for it with a guy proudly brandishing it with a broad smile, Mentos style!
Deletehaha how hilarious I think Ive never seen something like it here :/
ReplyDeleteGood! But then again, people in PR don't like second hand shopping for NORMAL items, so there wouldn't be a market for used toiletries and meds!
DeleteAs a person who has worked at a thrift store for almost four years now, all I can say is that yes we do sometimes sell weird stuff but then again weird people buy it. It does creep me out when people buy half used bottles of lotions, and used underwear. I swear there is one lady who comes in religiously every Saturday to buy a "beige" colored bra. To top it off she wears the same beige colored safari looking outfit when she's shopping.
ReplyDeleteWe have a core of customers who buy the used toiletries. We don't sell the vibrators or the sex stuff as we're a church run shop so we mostly just garbage those. The weirdest thing I think we've sold is live lizards. It's a weird business I tell you but it's also very fun.
Grossest thing that we sell is probably the carpets that go around the toilet with the matching toilet seat cover. Those items gross me out to no end but they always sell as I seem them in someone's cart when I'm walking around the store.
I shouldn't judge since I've dumpster dived... ;)
DeleteBut I figured there was a market for the used toiletries, bras, and undies-- so if people buy them, well, at least they're out of the landfills.
Everyone has their personal limits. Most of us draw the line at used toiletries, undies, and the toilet carpet things...
No worries, Van, I actually get a kick out of the lady who buys "beige" underwear.
DeleteOh, those totally gross me out.
DeleteThe toilet mats & toilet seat covers.
Gross. Gross. Gross.
Disturbing! The sickest thing I ever saw was personal lubricant. I refused to touch it to see if it was 'slightly used.' Something tells me that it was. Why, dear God!? Why!?
ReplyDelete<3 Jackie @ Let's Go Thrifting!
I think your description bought back a repressed memory of a simular experience I had. When will the horror end?
DeleteThis was at an auction, not a thrift store, but somebody actually bought a used electric toothbrush. Not surprisingly, there was nobody bidding against her!
ReplyDeleteIck!
DeleteOkay, these stories are gross! The worst thing I "found" was a 3" long bug with Lord knows how many legs. I reached for a bowl to check the maker, and he was chilling in the bowl underneath it. UGHH.
ReplyDeleteBut Anusol? I would love to meet the person who purchases that. Or, maybe I wouldn't.
Oh, the creepy crawlies I've encountered in this business. I love bugs, but not the unexpected ones.
Deletenot horrifying, but funny none the less... would be the capri pants (looked like they were hand sewn) and the fabric of choice was a black fabric dotted with "pants" in bright colors. It was pants... on pants!! funniest thing ever. I didn't think to take a picture of it... went back to do so a couple of days later and someone bought them. ha ha ha. pants on pants.
ReplyDeleteShould have took a pic! I'd love to see that!
DeleteThis has to be the thrift store on Blanding. I have never looked in that case because I know it's nothing in there I would ever buy.
ReplyDeleteYep, The Thrift Center. I looked on the way out for a laugh and wasn't dissapointed!
DeleteVan, this post had me laughing out load like a crazy woman! You should so do a video of you as the Thrift Police.....
ReplyDeleteHm...perhaps! I do want to make funny thrift videos :)
DeleteThis is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose. more info
