Cleaning Tips: Organizing Your Home for a Fresh Start in Spring

Today's guest post is bought to you by fellow thrifter Elizabeth, a copywriter for PennySaverUSA. She's an avid hunter located in Southern California. Like most of you, I'm working hard on purging my house, so I'm excited to share and use her spring cleaning tips:

I'm always making my house a mess! 'Tis the life of a busy artist and reseller! I've mastered Speed Cleaning!

Nothing’s better for waking up from a long winter hibernation than organizing your home to let the light in (even bears do it; we’ve checked). Today I’m sharing three easy spring cleaning tips I’ve found helpful for making my home feel fresh and organized. The best part? You don’t need to buy anything. We’ll work with what you already have in your home.

Let’s get organizing!

1. Organize cluttered closets and crannies –These hidden crap piles are always lurking, waiting to avalanche on us when we need to pull out that certain oddity for a project. Here’s my escape route:

a. Pull everything out.
b. Create a trash, keep and garage sale pile– separate accordingly.
c. Create a storage system for the keeps.
d. Unload your sell pile by placing a free garage sale ad on PennySaverUSA.com or check out our mobile garage sale app MOGASA.

2. Get rid of unwanted furnishings- We all have them, a table or chair we’ve held onto for sentimental reasons, but in all honesty, don’t serve a purpose in our home. My husband and I received an adorable tiffany-style lamp for our wedding, but it didn’t fit anywhere in our home. When I finally decided to give it to a friend, I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. If you don’t have a buddy to donate to, create a free ad on PennySaverUSA to find a buyer who will love it.

3. Rearrange your furniture – Walking into the same room year after year is boring. Try moving the couch onto a different wall, create a reading nook, or swap accent pieces from different rooms. It only takes a few simple changes to give your room an entirely new look. If you really want to go crazy, grab a can of paint and create an accent wall.

I hope you’ll have as much fun as I am reworking your living space. Mine is still a work in progress, but I’ve accomplished a lot as you can see from the photo. For more spring cleaning ideas, join us on PennySaverUSA, where we’re sharing spring cleaning tips all month long.

What are you doing to Spring Clean your pad this year? Do share, I need all the help I can get! I can't wait to host another yard sale and purge, purge, purge!

  2. Have already started the spring cleaning here. So far so good. I normally don't do garage sales as I like to just drop my things off at Goodwill and get that immediate release of letting something go. It's like getting a high when you let some things go...haha!

    1. It really feels so good to get excess junk out of the way! I'm having one more big yard sale in front of Treasure House on March 31st- after that I'm just donating loads of stuff! Can't wait.

  4. As always you are inspiring me to take action! We are getting ready to move to a new rental house so now is the time to clean and pare down. We are also enjoying our new ability to "let go" of things and if we cant donate we re-sell them. Gives us the opportunity to live with different things we find while out thrift shopping!

    1. That's one fun thing about reselling- it's nice to some of the merch around in the meantime since we sell what we love.

  6. I find I helps to concentrate on one specific thing at a time and see it all the way through. An example, the damp, musty smell in our bathroom was bugging me. I took a natural mold and mildew abatement solution, got up on the ladder and sponged all the ceiling and walls, and shower tiles down; I removed all towels and shower curtains down to wash, hung them in the sunshine to dry. Multi-tasking does not work for me. If I focus I feel I can have some small measure of accomplishment.

    1. I've heard of this of this and want to be more focused next week. Doing everything at once makes you progress too slowly...

  8. That is true; I should get rid of unwanted furnishings so I can have more space in my room. As you said I could give those to someone else who really needs it.
