Thrifted Table DIY: Comic Book Decoupage Coffee Table

Decoupage is my favorite way to revitalize a thrifted piece of furniture. In an hour or so you can have a fresh new colorful piece for your home or to sell. There are many ways to go about decoupaging furniture, this is a quick and easy method I used today:

Supplies: I used 3M Spray Mount and Krylon Spray-On Varnish this time. You can use elmer's white glue (watered down) or mod podge for both the adhesive and top coats. You'll need a comic book you don't mind damaging to glue to your furniture piece.

1) I chose a water-damaged, dumpster-dived Calvin and Hobbes comic for this project.
2) Cut out the panels I wanted to use.
3) Arranged the pieces on my table, making sure to keep the design balanced.
4) Applied Spray Mount to pages, stuck them down, and smoothed out bumps.
5) Coated the table with Kamar Varnish, waiting a few minutes between coats.

This is one of many methods I've tried to decoupage furniture. I try something a little different each time. Since I intend to sell this piece I'm going to top it with pour-on table resin. That's a tricky process (and slightly expensive) that I'll visit in a future DIY post!

How do you make over your thrifted or dived furniture? Paint? Sand? Restore? So many options...

  1. Quick question regarding the Kamar varnish: does it yellow up the decoupage? I've been using Minwax Polyshades clear polyurethane because it goes on clear and stays that way.

    1. The Kamar Varnish is non-yellowing as its meant to protect oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings. I had the yellowing "problem" with other varnishes. I kind of like how varnishes can yellow-up the comic book pages for an antique affect though...

  3. I have plans to use origami paper to decoupage a folding chair. I'm envisioning a patchwork effect, and will probably use a set of papers with gold tones. I love love love to decoupage, and I recently turned a bunch of dollar store piggy banks into works of modern art with a little modge podge and tissue paper (I work with tweens).

    1. Both crafts sound like fun! I miss craft nights/art nights like that, my fondest childhood memories involve creativity of some kind.

  4. Calvin and Hobbs rocks! I totally get that you used a damaged book- talk me through how to cut up old stuff, even if it is in B-A-D shape, I guess my hang ups are from my past, I worked in a museum while in college. I am so wussy about cutting up old books.

Question about you post from yesterday-can I use coconut oil instead of shea butter? Same proportions?

    1. I could only use a damaged book, it would feel blasphemous to use an undamaged one. I share the same reverse for books. I'm going to try photocopies of book pages new time, I can't recommend it yet since I'm not sure if the ink will run depending on type of copy used.

I just pulled the pages out of this book, it was easy since it was damaged and the glue was loose. With many books and comics books if you pull right you can get the pages out cleanly.

You can use coconut oil instead of shea butter, I didn't recommend it because the texture changes from solid to liquid depending on the temperature in the room at the time. I keep my house on the warm side so coconut oil is always liquid...not good for deodorant use! You can keep it in the fridge to keep it solid. That would make the menthol sensation even tinglier!

  6. Cute table, you are so creative Van! This reminds me of my girlfriend Bunny's kitchen table. Back in the 80's she took a butcher block table and covered the top with photos and then decoupaged it. I recently visited her and she still has it. So funny to see the retro hair styles and clothes! The kids are grown now and I'm sure their girlfriends love seeing those baby pictures too!

    1. That's a good idea! It would be a sweet gift for mother's day...photocopying the precious family photos and not using the originals, of course!

  12. It is known as a fact that the comic book writer will not know where their product is graded. To get the ideal grade, one will require the opinion of an expert comic grader. The most perfect way of doing this is through first determining the condition of the book which can be implemented through various factors. old marvel comics
