A DIY Haunted Mansion of Painted Second-Hand Finds: A Dream Horror House

I'm in awe of this space created by painter/conceptual artist duo Rob Pruitt and Jonathan Horowitz. Documented in a favorite thrifty interior design book made by the now defunct Budget Living, "Home Cheap Home", it's a space filled with beautifully selected vintage furniture and artwork and perfectly complimentary paint choices. The homeowners haunted estate sales, eBay, and auction houses to find the eclectic antiques and vintage pieces you'll see below.

I love how they boldly painted vintage appliances, kept original details, and added kitschy plastic and toy accessories to keep to the playful haunted mansion theme.

Each room has a different color palate, the colors matching so well is contrived but it works so well in this Victorian home.

The playful details don't keep rooms from being dramatic or elegant, though, as is the case with the first photo of their living room and the bedroom above.

And this bathroom! I love how the painted orange door matches the frames on the vintage anatomy posters. The wood on the walls adds some nice texture, too.

Opportunities to add some fun details aren't overlooked, love this custom decal an often overlooked spot, the toilet seat lid.

The decals really give me some ideas for adding whimsy to a rental space!

Love the exterior details too. Some might scream blasphemy at painting a classic Victorian house black but this looks so good.

And the patio! Such beauty! The mix of color is absolutely beautiful, this would be such a fun spot to sip drinks and read or have a party.

A lot of people have called me crazy for gushing over this "too weird for words" house but damn, it's a horror fan's dream and clearly curated with an artist's eye for color and balance. Yep. I'd move here in a heart beat!

*All the images in this post are from Home Cheap Home, an awesome home decor idea book. Check it out at your local library to see some gorgeous spaces.

What's your favorite detail of this horror house? I love so much of it but that patio above is so glorious.

    1. Glad you like it. I think I might have to update with better pictures soon. Having severe PC issues at the moment and am seeing how they look on another computer, eek...

  2. Hey-- very cool! He did a great job. I have a pair of child sized ice cream parlor chairs I once thought of spray painting black then covering the seats with Halloween fabric. Still like the idea; just thought it would look strange in December! Need to find that book you mentioned. Sounds good.

    1. I've always secretly wanted an entire Halloween-themed house to live in all year. The wish for every horror nerd ;) You could make exchangeable covers for your seats perhaps, for the different holidays?

    1. It looks like a large matt painted ceramic artichoke. I'd want to move right in but I can see why it's "too much" and "too contrived/staged" for most. :D

  5. That house is beyond cool! Loving the bold dark colors with the vintage finds! I so think there is much to learn from this house haunted or not! The gardener in me was definitely drawn to the bird bath planter...so sleek..and I am digging those kitchen appliances! Thanks for popping on over to my space! Yours is lovely!

    1. Thanks for the kind words. The gardener in me loves the exterior too and even the likely deliberate pop of color from the pink flowers in planters around the house.

  7. Oh I know this house very well. Me and my best friend used to drool over it! Isn't it amazing? Interesting, when was this out? I know then it seemed very out there. But looking at it now you can see so many elements that have become popular in everyday decorating. Of course I remember when it seemed CRAZY to put antlers on the wall now I wished it felt crazy again because I'm sick to death of them! :)

    1. Something in me still loves antlers despite the trend. I think partly because it reminds me of my favorite video game, Resident Evil. :D The undying trend helps me sell 'em too, yay. The book came out in 2004, right in time for me to consider moving out (was 17, just graduated) and lusting over what my future home could be like. Glad I'm not the only one who's drooled over this space.

  8. I love that they painted it black! I have a thing for creepy looking old houses. I wouldn't want to live in one, but I absolutely love seeing them! There's a house in a city near me that was built to look like the Munster's TV home - I'm pulling for the owners to paint it black now! It would be the most awesomely-creepy house ever.
