Things I Didn't Buy at the Flea Market: Mod Goodness, Oddities, Star Wars and More

My apartment is gloriously minimal and I've felt stress levels around work reduce...it can mean only one thing; I've stopped hunting! I've been pushing to sell off my remaining wares and it's made me highly selective about what I purchase to sell. Here are some tempting bits I've left behind the past month or so. And others that were just to awesomely weird not to share:

I desperately wanted this gorgeous atomic style orange swiggle-patterned (scientific, super professional name, obviously) tumblers. They are what my soul looks like; bright, chaotic, lively. But I didn't want the basket and napkins. Nor did I want to pay $10 for an item likely to sit for too long. I had to pass.

Oh such beauty, why did I have to leave you!? I tried to get the vendor to go down on the price but no dice. It's for the best, I have way too much glassware. I must stop that fetish.

I also couldn't get a vendor to go down on this charming table. The back has storage for "hiding" things. I think this would make the perfect bar for a living room but he wanted $15.00 and I don't have the time/space/patience to fix up all the little faults with it.

This guy was just a bit of memory lane for me. You know I love my Japanese robots, I spent a great deal of middle school obsessed with this anime series. You can't go wrong with Gundam. I would have been elated to find this in my school days. Now I can watch it for free online.

And this just. Wow. Horror of horrors, why do you exist?!

Anything with a Native American motif appeals to me. Perhaps it's cultural appropriation but I don't know, something about it...  This guy is clearly to rough so behind he stayed.

Something about these retro diner chairs appealed to me too, not in line with my personal decorating aesthetic but unique and fun anyway. Sculptural, even.

This vintage rocker and chalk board are a double-whammy of awesome. Both too expensive so I took my photos and moved on.

This vendor has beautiful items- love the vintage signage. All out of my price range so I moved on after a quick shot. You will be very hard pressed to find a vintage sign for less than $100ish around these parts.

This was too weird not to stop and document. Almost regret not buying it. So much "what"? Why?

I enjoyed the typography and illustrations on the front of this. I want the house, that credenza "dad" built at the bottom right, my own organized workshop as picture top right, my personal handyman, the ability to build anything I want...I just look at this cover and dreamed, don't judge me. The typeface mix and color choice is very nice, too.

I quite liked this 1960s ottoman/storage combination piece and the price wasn't that bad, but I left it for another buyer. Seemed like the type of piece that could sit for too long. I'll have no more of that!

And a lovely retro stroller in nice condition, these have been popping up in my hunts frequently like some type of devious omen. No! You won't make me go back to church, stroller! And I sure as hell won't be anticipating use of you any time soon or ever! I call them "Rosemary's Baby" strollers for my love of the flick. They are just creepy to me now. Thanks, movie.

And yay, beautiful pop culture goodness. I should have but didn't even ask a price on the glorious Star Wars sheets. So beautiful!

Been leaving anything interesting behind at the flea markets lately? One day I'll be back to hunting with abandon, for now, I must hold back...

  1. I think you should have asked about the sheets, too! :) With the new movies coming out, there's a big demand for vintage alongside new. An interesting variety of leave-behinds you have there.

    Mine:
An estate sale was *very* proud of their glass gallon jar of "vintag" buttons....glass was dirty and the top was Fort Knox security taped so I couldn't sort through to see if they were all true vintage (might have been worth the price) or just whatever random buttons found at the bottom of the Made-in-China box. That was over two weeks ago and it's still haunting me. Le Sigh!

    1. Neeext time, I do see them around a bit but rarely ask since people raise the price on kid's sheets these days. Yep, I hate when cool finds haunt you. Luckily haven't felt that type of siren's call in a while.

  2. My dad has the whole set of Popular Mechanics encyclopedias. He has had them for as long as I can remember and I don't think he's ever really used them. He insists on keeping them because he might use them one day.

  3. Yeah, what it the world is that space shuttle plaque trying to convey? Maybe I don't want to know. Like that Native American piece. I've had a few Native American items sit and sit-- guess it's not an "in" style right now. I haven't had to use much restraint lately because I haven't found anything of interest! Might go hunting tomorrow.

    1. I haven't hunted in earnest in quite a while, throughly enjoying the break. I do have a little bit from yard sales to share on Monday.

  4. Don't pass by sheets next time you see them. I have been doing well with retro vintage groovy sheets. Some people use them for the fabric, some people use them to retro up their pad, but regardless, they are one of my new hunts! Plus, its crazy, but those vintage sheets...wow they are so thick and luxurious, not like the crappy sheets they make nowadays. Sheets from the 60s-70s...fly off the rack! Go back and get those Star Wars sheets! Unless he is asking too much...then kick him in the nuts and run!

    2. I usually scoop them up and sell 'em but couldn't be bothered that day. Had a feeling he'd ask for too much. I'll see if he's there next time :) I have a "toy vendor" that I'm always asking to bring me vintage pop culture sheets. The ones I get are usually kinda thread-bare from long-term kid use, haha.

  6. Those red 1970s chairs are almost exactly like ones we had in our kitchen. Not my current taste but brings back the memories...I think I have a picture of me with a birthday cake in one. Cheers!

  7. That's some good stuff. I love the weird spaceship hitch hiker paining and that navy blue pram!

  8. ooh you did see some cool stuff. That wall art with the lady hitchhiking is to bizarre I would of gotten just because. Those orange squiggly cups are nice too and that native American bust thing is pretty cool even though it's in rough shape.
yeah i think the American Pickers show has created a huge surge in the price of vintage signs everywhere. I went to a random garage sale a couple years ago and someone wanted $100.00 for a plastic gas station sign. It's not like it was some porcelain cool vintage sign it was probably from the late 90's if then.

    1. Yep, same around here, suddenly any sign is worth hundreds. It's funny how much I get "You can reselll this for -insert outlandish sum-" comments as a reseller. Nope, cannot :D !

  10. I'd love a hunk of that driftwood for my garden. When I go to flea markets, I'm always on the lookout for those boxes full of small items on the tables. There's always something to find at the bottom like skeleton keys, religious medals, good luck tokens, broken watches, old monopoly game pieces, brass or cast iron miniatures, bottle openers and other odds and ends. That's the stuff I like to hunt for. Small, metal and old things.

  11. The spaghetti tumblers are pretty groovy. I'm up to my ears in glassware, too!

Vintage pip culture sheets, I used to find all the time. All I find now are Mickey Mouse!
